I, Am [A Guide To The Labyrinth.] James Morrison

I am a guide to the Labyrinth

Monarch of the protean towers
on this cool stone patio
above the iron mist
sunk in its own waste
breathing its own breath

POWER

I can make the earth stop in
its tracks. I made the
blue cars go away.

I can make myself invisible or small.
I can become gigantic & reach the
farthest things. I can change
the course of nature.
I can place myself anywhere in
space or time.
I can summon the dead.
I can perceive events on other worlds,
in my deepest inner mind,
& in the minds of others.

I can

I am

James 'Jim' Morrison remains lesser known for His Poetry than for His wild Pop-Star 'Persona'.

A little serious Study of Mr Morrison's Poetic Self -Expression can perhaps shine a 'Light' on The Creative Process of One of America's Finest Musicians.

A Young Jim and His band 'The Doors'[of Consciousness]...namedafter Huxley's 'Doors of Perception'..[ie drug experience/mushroom LSD etc] was heavily influenced by His Father.
[kinda goes without saying!] His Father was involved in the 'Psyche-Warfare' Program of the US Military along with notable [and honourable] Service in SE Asia.

[SEE WEB 'MONARCH' PROGRAMMING'ETC..]

Jim wanted to  'Break on through to the other side' ie 'expand' Consciousness.
There are many Sites ..that explore His AcademicMusical Endeavours.
I would like to concentrate on His Poetry.
The Primary Clue to what is 'going on' in His Creative Mind is the Word 'Labyrinth'.

This Word shows up in many Artistic Creations Movies Mythology etc etc etc.

There are more than one literal explanation for it's Etymology Perhaps a little too.. complicated? to go into at this time.
But I make the Assumption That You will understand [at least in a Cursory Fashion] What I mean by 'Labyrinth'.
[ChannelsPassagewaysseemingly randomYet integral to the Design]

Mythology is full of Examples  of 'Heroes' Who usually Descend  rarely Ascend into the Labyrinth.
Psychologically speaking this 'Descent' this 'Going Down'[into THE EARTH] can indicate the Onset of 'Depression' [in extreme cases Psychosis or a Psychotic 'Episode'].
A 'DOWNER'is also an AMPHETAMINE 'trip' that produces negativity..
obviously an 'UPPER' has the opposing effect.

Line One 'I made the 'Blue Cars' go away.

Pretty Self- Explanatory? Blue is Universally accepted  as being in a 'low' State of Mind? ..

BLUE ALSOIS A SYMBOL FOR 'THINKING'FUNCTION IN MANDALA'S ETC..
[MANDALA SYMBOLISM IS FOUND ACROSS THE WORLD....BY STUDYING INDIVIDUAL ETHNIC MANDALA'SA COMMON DESIGN EMERGES...MANDALA'S
ARE HEALING SYMBOLS..ACCORDING TO CARL JUNGFOR THEY' BALANCE'..THE PSYCHE/SOUL...THE LABYRINTH IS THE SELF.]

                                                                        [Native American]
                                                                             [Tibetan]
                                [AVOLOKITISVARA,BUDDHA, OF,INFINITE COMPASSION]

Mandala (Sanskritमण्डल Maṇḍala, 'circle') is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing theUniverse.[1] The basic form of most mandalas is a square with four gates containing a circle with a center point. Each gate is in the general shape of a T.[2][3] Mandalas often exhibit radial balance.[4]
The term is of Sanskrit origin. It appears in the Rig Veda as the name of the sections of the work, but is also used in other religions and philosophies, particularly Buddhism.
In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of practitioners and adepts, as a spiritual guidance tool, for establishing a sacred space, and as an aid to meditation and trance induction.
In common use, mandala has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmosmetaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.

Why 'Cars?' Well My  Theory is that the Car becomes the 'Autocratic' or Controlling Symbol. We are now going to be Driven! ie Obsessed with the Unconscious Contents about to be exposed by the Poet!

[WE CAN ALSO SUBSTITUTE A PHONETIC EQUIVALENT 'KA' FOR EXAMPLE
IS A 'SPIRIT' IN EGYPTOLOGY....MONARCH IS A BUTTERFLY PSYCHE IS GREEK FOR BUTTERFLY..SEE WEB'MONARCH PROGRAMMING'..ETC..]

A More Modern -Variant?..Chasing Cars Snow Patrol.[SEE ;YOUTUBE]

Primarily We can see that Jim's Car is going to take all ofUs on a Personal Ride into His Ego.

[JIM THE 'BACKDOOR MAN'WAS UNCONSCIOUSLY EXPOSING HISDEEPEST MOST INNER THOUGHTS BY 'PROJECTING' ONTO EVERYDAY OBJECTS..MUCH LIKE VAN GOGH..PAINTING A CHAIR SEEMS MEANINGLESS -UNLESS YOU HAVE APRIORI KNOWLEDGE THAT A CHAIR IS A SYMBOL OF 'SELF'.
EDINGERTHE JUNGIAN ANALYST CITES 'CHAIR' AS BEING EQUAL TO 'CATHEDRA'   [THE LATIN TRANSLATION] THEN EXPOUNDS ON THIS IDEA SPEAKING 'EX-CATHEDRA'#CHAIRMAN/WOMANETC..IT IS A MAN- MADE OBJECT THAT NOWTHANKSTOANDTHROUGH THE ARTISAN'S CRAFT...A KING OR QUEEN CAN BE 'ENTHRONED'.......
FREUD CALLED DREAMS THE 'ROYAL ROAD'...BUT ALL ROADS LEAD SOMEPLACE...
THIS METAPHOR IS VERY IMPORTANT DEPENDING ON THE CONTEXT/INQUIRY.]

He tried to tell Us this but maybe We missed the 'Blue[OMNI] Bus?' calling Us?

THE 'I' IS SEEN SEVEN TIMES IN THIS POEM.[INDICATIVE]

[ JIM WASPROBABLY A VICTIM OF HOMOSEXUAL RAPEIN SOME SORT OF 'INITIATION' CEREMONYAND WASUNABLE TO RECONCILE THIS TRAUMAWITHTHESUPPOSED'BENEFIT' OF GROUP/COVEN MEMBERSHIP.HENCE 'BACKDOORMAN'IS'STREET'FOR A PERSON WHOINDULGESINSODOMY.HISTORICALLYAN EXAMPLE IS.THE NAZISWHO ALSO TRIED TODESTROY PERSONAL IDENITY BY SHAVING HAIR ETCAND AFRICAN TRIBESMEN WHO WOULD SODOMIZE CAPTUREDPRISONERS ETC]

Moving away but not forgetting that the 'Blue Car' is the Autocratic Symbol for a moment Here is a little about the 'Protean Tower' Symbol that immediately follows.
'Proteus' has multifarious Symbolism. Wikipedia has a full explanation as have many other Reference Sites.

Proteus in literature and psychology

The German mystical alchemist Heinrich Khunrath (1560–1605) wrote of the shape-changing sea-god who, because of his relationship to the sea, is both a symbol of the unconscious as well as the perfection of the art. Alluding to the scintilla, the spark from ‘the light of nature’ and symbol of the anima mundi", Khunrath in Gnostic vein stated of the Protean element Mercury
our Catholick Mercury, by virtue of his universal fiery spark of the light of nature, is beyond doubt Proteus, the sea god of the ancient pagan sages, who hath the key to the sea and …power over all things. Von Hyleanischen Chaos| in Carl Jung, vol. 14:50
The poet John Milton was also aware of the association of Proteus with the Hermetic art of alchemy. In Paradise Lost (III.603–06) he wrote of the alchemists who sought the philosopher's stone
In vain, though by their powerful Art they bind
Volatile Hermes, and call up unbound
In various shapes old Proteus from the Sea,
Drain'd through a Limbec to his native form.
In his discourse The Garden of Cyrus (1658) Milton's contemporary Sir Thomas Browne, pursuing the figure of the quincunx, queried
Why Proteus in Homer the Symbole of the first matter, before he settled himself in the midst of his Sea-Monsters, doth place them out by fives?
Shakespeare uses the image of Proteus to establish the character of his great royal villain Richard III in the play Henry VI, Part Three, the prequel to his play Richard III. In Act III, Scene ii, Richard (not yet the king), boasts:
I can add colors to the chameleon,
Change shapes with Proteus for advantages,
And set the murderous Machiavel to school.
Can I do this, and cannot get a crown?
Tut, were it farther off, I'll pluck it down.
Shakespeare also names one of the main characters of his play The Two Gentlemen of Verona Proteus. This character is inconstant in his affections. In the finale of the play when his deceptions have been unraveled and he is face to face with his friend Valentine and original love Julia, Proteus says:
O Heaven, were man
but constant, he were perfect: that one error
fills him with faults; makes him run through all sins
Inconstancy falls off, ere it begins.
In 1807 William Wordsworth finished his sonnet on the theme of a modernity deadened to Nature, which opens "The world is too much with us", with a sense of nostalgia for the lost richness of a world numinous with deities:
…I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea.
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.[5]
In modern times the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung defined the mythological figure of Proteus as a personification of the unconscious, who, because of his gift of prophecy and shape-changing has much in common with the central but elusive figure of alchemy, Mercurius.
Proteus is the name of the submarine in the original story by Otto Klement and Jay Lewis Bixby that was made into a movie, Fantastic Voyage, and a book by Isaac Asimov. Both came out in 1966.

The alien character of Prot in the book trilogy by Gene Brewer and played by Kevin Spacey in the movie K-PAX, like Proteus was said to embody, was a modernized "shape shifter" and magical type of advanced mystical ET who "walked in" to humanoid bodies, and shared wisdom and insights into the human condition.

Wow! That's quite a lot of Information!

Remember! There is also a 'Tower!'...............But Let's go back to the 'Blue Car'.

As I have explained [in Previous Postings] 'TECHNOS' is the' New God-Imago'.
The 'Car' is not just an Auto-Mobile. It is an 'Imago' the Blue Colour gives the Symbol Feeling Contents.
[TECHNOS IS MY OWN INVENTION-I USE IT TO DESCRIBE'MODERNITY/INDUSTRIALIZATION AND TECHNOLOGY
'WHICH IS OVERWHELMING THE PSYCHE OF MODERN MAN]

[THINKING AND FEELING INDICATE HIS INNER PERSONALITY 'TYPE'
THEY TAKE'PRIORITY' IN HIS PSYCHE HIS 'SENSATION AND INTUITION' HAS BEEN SEVERELY DAMAGED...
THIS IS WHY THE LABYRINTH HAS 'APPEARED'..IN SYMBOL-FORM'....HE CANNOT EXPRESS WHAT HE WANTS TO SHOUT TO THE WORLD...
THAT HE IS HURTING AND ALONE....SO THE 'SELF' OVER-RIDES HIS DAMAGED EGO AND ALLOWS EXPRESSION...MUCH LIKE A RELIEF-VALVE ON A STEAM-ENGINE...
WHICH IS ANOTHER METAPHOR/SYMBOL-LETS THE 'PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE 'DROP'...RESTORES 'CORRECT WORKING ' ]

It should be remembered that the 'God-Imago' is not 'God' it is merely a Symbolic Re-Presentation into Consciousness.[MUCH LIKE AN INNOCUOUS CHAIR]
Lack of [any other] Colour Symbolism in the rest of the Poem mark it as Significant ie; Autocratic.

But let's reconsider the Line;

'I made the Blue Cars go away'.

Immediately We are confronted with the 'I'. This- is Jim's Ego.
If 'I' made them' Go Away' The Question could be Where ?were where They to begin with? and to Where? did 'They' go?
What 'Power Source' provided the Imaginative Movement?..[LIBIDO=THE 'BREATH'/PNEUMA/SPIRIT ETC.
'BREATHING IT'S OWN BREATH']

Expounding on this obvious Animal Metaphor is the purpose of Psychotherapy but without Dialogue it cannot go past hypothetical speculation.
This 'Breathing' is important and without going into too much Mechanical detail[ Breather Pipes on Engines etc]
it is indicative of 'LUNG' [WHICH IN TURN IS CHINESE FOR 'DRAGON'ie COULD BE SEEN AS HEROIN DUE TO 'DRAGON' BEING
A STREET TERM FOR HEROIN] so a possible 'progression' could be made - 'it's own breath' is neither male or female-
it is androgynous.[linking directly to Freud's Theorem]

The Cool 'Stone'..[Could be Metaphor for 'Stoned' out of His Head or!
The 'Philosopher's Stone..The 'Lapis'.]...is His 'STONE'/=STREET/SLANG FOR? HEROIN.

'Monarch' is an interesting Word. 'Arch' hasmany connotations...but as Jung pointed out..
the 'Unconscious' loves 'ARCHAIC' languages...MONARCH IS ALSO A BUTTERFLY...
[BUTTERFLY=PSYCHE IN GREEK]

My Theory is- He has had an [Unconscious]'Identification' with the 'Self ' [as Postulated in Jungian Terminology]..
He hasUNCONSCIOUSLY 'identified' through His own ADDICTION/ Suffering[craving] with the Suffering 'Deity'..
[be it Judeo-Christian Pagan or otherwise-IT SUFFERS BECAUSE OF IT'S OWN IGNORANCE]...
HE HAS BECOME'INFLATED' OR 'EGO-IDENTIFIED'.

'IRON MIST'= DEPRESSION [AS METAPHOR]..SEE ;'ALCHEMY' BY M.L.VON FRANZ

THEREFORE MENTALLY..HEROIN IS/HAS BECOME 'ANIMATED' INTO? A CENTAUR ie[ANIMAL] SYMBOL OF?.HALF HORSE/HALF MAN.
YET HEROIN IS REALLY-VEGATIVE A POPPY /FLOWER DERIVATIVE...
                                                         [ A Patient of Jung's - Mandala from 'AION']
THEREFOREIT IS THE
'DEVIL IN DIS-GUISE'?...[TO COMPLETE THE 'TRIAD' OF ANIMAL VEGETABLE...WE NEEED..? MINERAL!...HENCE THE STONE..THIS I SUSPECT IS WHY ENGLISH POP GROUP/PUBLIC SCHOOL GOBSHITES 'THE ROLLING STONES' GOT THEIR NAME FROM...HAND ROLLING JOINTS AS OPPOSED TO MARBLES PLAYING ETC!]

WHYTHE 'DEVIL?'...HISTORICALLY THE DEVIL SERVES A PURPOSE AND SOMETIMES IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO EXPLAIN THIS DUE TO THE NATURAL PREJUDICE OF ORGANI
ZED RELIGIONS ETC...BUT MYTHOLOGY CAN
ALLOW A LIMITEDAMOUNT OF INFORMATION-'CENTAURS'ETC ARE MYTHIC HEALERS..AND OPIATES OF COURSE ARE USED INMEDICAL ANAESTHESIA.
FOR EXAMPLE.[IF WE KNOW WHAT IT IS WE CAN KILL IT]

['DIS' AS A WORD HAS MULTIPLE MEANINGS-IN BUDDHISM FOR EXAMPLE IT IS AN ACRONYM FOR DESIRE IS SORROW]OTHER POETS HAVE USED 'DIS' AS A WORD FOR 'HELL' AND THE WASTELAND REALM OF THE UNGODLY]
[ THE EARTH IS THE DOMAIN ASSIGNED TO THE 'FALLEN ANGEL']

AND LACK OF UNDERSTANDING/ IGNORANCE LEADS
TO DEPENDENCY AND LOSS OF SELF-WORTH..

[THE BUDDHA TURNED THE DEMONS INTO FLOWERS...THE BUDDHA IS..THE LABYRINTH!
..THE ARCHETYPE OF THE 'SELF'..SO IN EFFECT THE LABYRINTH BEING PRIMORDIAL AND INSTINCTUAL AND THE BUDDHA BEING
'ENLIGHTENED' AND HUMAN ARE FACETS OF THE 'JEWEL' OR 'LAPIS'-OUR JIM KNOWS ALL ABOUT LONGCHEPA'S POEM/ SUTRA FROM
STUDY- HE IS AN INTELLECTUAL TRYING TO UNDERSTAND LIFE ITSELF THROUGH NATURE STUDY- BUD AND THE BODHI TREE ARE INTRICATELY
CONNECTED BY MORE THAN MERE SEMANTICS  ]

THE NARCOTIC CONTROLS THE ADDICT.

[Addendum; I also now believe He like thousands of American Children particularly from California-was a Child Victim OF SYSTEMATICABUSE.]

If the Ego has an Encounter with the 'Self '. A Variety of Scenarios  can ensue.
The usual case is for the Ego to SUFFER! [ Jung provides many Case History Examples.'Bruder Klaus' etc]

The Ego brings 'Realisation' to the 'Self ' and a 'Transference' Occurs.[ENERGIC]

'I' can make THE EARTH[MUD IS SLANG FOR HEROIN] stop in it's TRACKS......

[TRACKS ARE NEEDLE MARKS -JIM NEVER INJECTED HE SNORTED HEROIN- THE EARTH DOES NOT MAKE 'TRACKS' BUT CARS SOMETIMES DO! GET IT?]

S0 here is the reason.

 NARCOTIC ADDICTION is finding 'SELF-EXPRESSION'...
through the largely unused portion of Jim's inborn Temperament.[SENSATION AND INTUITION]

THIS IS THE 'POWER SOURCE'...IN HIS SOUL...HE CRAVES NEW SENSATIONS TO
COMPENSATE FOR HIS FEELINGS OF INADEQUACY...
JIM ISN'T A WILD 'POPSTAR'...HE IS AN ACTOR..'ALL ALONE'...HE IS A SHY RESERVED AND INTELLIGENT POET.
HE KNOWS THIS BUT DENIES IT TO HIMSELF..HIS INTUITION...
IS ACTUALLY WRITING THE POEM..FROM THE HEART...HE KNOWS HE IS KILLING
HIMSELF..HE KNOWS THE DRUGS ARE CONTROLLING HIM...BUT HE FEELS WEAK..
UNDESERVING OF FRIENDSHIP A SHAM-ACTOR AND THIS ULTIMATELY FALSE
IDEA OF 'SELF'..WORTH...IS DAMAGING.
HIS PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS SUFFER AS HIS NEGATIVE EGO SEEKS TO CONTROL
EVERYTHING..TO BECOME 'MONARCH'.

LANDSEER THE ARTIST PAINTED HIS 'MONARCH OF THE GLEN'

THE HORNS OF HIS OWN DILEMMA?...'HORNY'..OR 'LIBIDO'?...
THIS OF COURSE IS SUBJECTIVE.
I WOULD LIKE TO FURTHER EXPLORE THIS IDEA...AS THE 'STAG'..APPEARS
IN MANY MANY WORKS OF LITERATURE..AND OCCASIONALLY IS ASSOCIATED
WITH THE 'FOOL'..ARCHETYPE HOWEVER OTHER PROJECTS ARE TAKING MY TIME AND ATTENTION.PLEASE FEEL FREE TO COMMENT IN BOX BELOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE FURTHER INFORMATION..I VALUE DIALOGUE.

The usual Case[IN RECORDED EXAMPLES]  is for the Ego to be overwhelmed with 'Archaic' Content which can take Many 'Forms'.
In Jim's Case something special has occurred. The reciprocal Psychic ie 'Imaginative' 'Power Movement ' has now acquired new 'Form';[ARCHETYPAL ACTIVATION]
The Blue[DEEP] is now replaced with 'Cool Stone'  and 'Iron Mist' even though the Lines occur before the main Body of the Poem.
Coldness=Beginning of Negativity 'Monarch' or Ruler is the 'Royal' 'Form'  of the Negative Archetype Previously identified as 'Satyr'[ in another of Jim's works.].

HORSE=HEROIN
HALF MAN HALF HORSE=CENTAUR.[GREEK MYTHOLOGY]..THE 'WOUNDED HEALER'..
SATYR IS A 'FORM' OF 'PAN' THE GREEK 'GOD'.[CANNABIS-I HAVE SHOWN ELSEWHERE-HAS THE CHEMICAL 'DMT' AS IT'S ENTHEOGEN]
IT IS INTERESTINGTO READ UP ON
'CHIRON' THE 'HEAD CENTAUR'...WE FINDOUT THAT HE WAS A HEALER.....
THE GREEK/PSYCHE/CENTAURCONNECTION!..
THE WOUND FOR JIM IS DEEP..THE TENTACLES OF ADDICTION CLAW..WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS ARE LEADING HIM TO DEEP DEPRESSION..
HIS OWN SOUL IS TRYING TO HEAL ITSELF AS HIS RAVAGED BODY....SENDS IT'S
OWN SIGNALS TO HIS SCREAMING BRAIN...AND JIM UNDERGO'S..
WITHDRAWAL FROM THE WORLD...INTO THE TWILIGHT AREA OF SEMI-REALITY..
WHERE PAIN AND PLEASURE HAVE NO MEANING...AND FRIENDS ARE
NON-EXISTENT THE STATE OF DISSOCIATION..THE DOMAIN OF DEVILS AND ANGELS...THE CORE.

Remember 'Ego' is Latin for 'I Am'!

Now Jim or rather Jim's Ego has become  'Identified with the Negative Archetype' or 'Inflated'.[a very Negative Inflation=Depression]

THE DEVIL[HEROIN]HAS STOLEN HIS SOUL.
HEROIN HAS DECEIVED YET AGAIN..AND JIM'S 'FALL'..IS TO BE A SPECTACULAR
A 'STAR FALLING FROM HEAVEN'..INTO..THE COLD EARTH...
DRUG ADDICTION.

How can this be? the Answer is in the Mind of the Writer-He thought up the Lines before actually Writing them down! How the final Poem reads is actually a 'reverse' Interpretation of His Psychic Experience.
The Ego has assimilated the Self. -Jim's Ego has become  'God'.[Negative 'Aspect']
Now He[THINKS HE] can do all the 'Godlike' Things in the rest of the Poem. [Hence the End Line 'I can']
He has successfully accessed and partaken in the 'Divine'.[the Collective Unconscious]
However like all who seek to join the Godhead He now suffers the fate of all former  Man-God 'Heroes'.
And issoon -to be torn apart.

THE SECRET OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER...HAS BEEN FOUND.

DEATH IS PART OF LIFE.

His Ego has 'Identified with the Archetype' and He gains a 'Godlike Power' The Source [of all His 'Energy'] [or Libido] is the Archetype.
This Archetype now assumes Control It is the 'Blue Car' ie 'Technos'.As to whether Automobiles are a Blessing? or a Curse? this...is Subjective.

Can the 'Devil' serve any useful purpose? I think Yes. but this also is subjective. It is Important to remember...You Don't Pray TO the Devil[NEGATIVE/EGO]...You Pray FOR the Devil!...
Without Poets the Devil is just another MeaninglessIRRELEVANT... Word...

Although the Poetic Structure appears somewhat Orthodox We must remember the 'Tower'.
There are multifarious examples of 'Tower'  symbolism Biblical Fairy Tales etc etc It can be seen [Metaphorically] as 'Pride' or 'Penis symbolism' or a Host of 'Allegorical' Ideas.
The Thing to remember [Perhaps] is that the Tower [usually] is Destroyed! and the Destruction is a reciprocal event to it's own Creation!
[IMPOTENCE IN MALES FOR EXAMPLE...OR FEMININE DOMINANCE IN THE 'FORM'
OF HOMOSEXUALITY FOR EITHER SEX]
.THE NEGATIVE ARCHETYPE IS PART OF GOD'S PLAN.
IT FINDS 'FORM' THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY OF HUMAN UNDERSTANDING. IT IS PART OF THE PRINCIPLE OF CREATION.THIS  IS WHY POETRY HAS TO BE FROM THE HEART.

The 'Lizard King?' Sorry Jim just your Imagination taking over Your  sadly Unconscious Power of discerning Reality.[Monarch or'King'..on 'Cool Stone'...= Reptile BasiliskDragon etc..]

DINOSAURS TYRANNOSAURUS REX?...
The Reptile and the Bird are actually the same Thing!- It's just the Perception or Perspective that changes and This is always Subjective.
[For Example See; Pictures of Egyptian Pharaohs..Look at Their Head Ornaments..
They usually show a Snake and a Bird..on the Forehead...DNA etc]

As Edinger Says "To Suffer the Opposites[ie be Severely Depressed] is to be closer to God."

The  Poem is actually a 'Study in Depression' and unchecked Depression  is Dangerous potentially Lethal. Help is available.
It is no longer necessary to become the 'Man of Constant Sorrow'.
Sadness terrible Loneliness feeling 'Isolated' -all so Un-Necessary.
THE POEM IS THE HEALING MEDIUM ACTUALLY WRITING DOWN YOUR THOUGHTS IS A THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUE.

I Am and I can are now the Words of a Jim who has realised that He not the Archetype has written the Poem. Nothing has changed except Jim who  like All of us is made in the' Image' of the 'Creator'. But this change has made Jim something the Infinite Godhead does not have the capacity to realise. It has made Jim an Individual and a Poet.

Other Poems [by Jim] make Reference to  'the Price' demanded [By The 'Realised Archetype'].
A sacrifice is always demanded and unfortunately this is usually a  Piece of Personal Anatomy!
CIRCUMCISION FOR EXAMPLE DERIVES DIRECTLY FROM EGYPTIAN 'SOLAR' RELIGION.. and Solar 'Cults' such as The Roman Pre-Christian were all Penis based/Fertility Symbol.
[The Penis being the 'One Eyed 'God']

If you worship the old Gods They always demand Payment![sacrifice] This has been seen in countless examples of So-called 'Esoterica'.
[THE 'OLD GODS'-ARE INSTINCTUAL DRIVES]

Luckily for Us We now know that it is They that depend on Us! Simple Human Beings as We are- to keep Them alive!

and of course We can decide the 'Fate of The 'Gods'[Archetypes] with the realisation that They Pre-date
all known History -therefore They must be Eternal and 'WILL'  cannot cope with Spontaneous Archetypal Phenomena which over-ride all Logic and Reason. Organized Religion has incorporated
much 'Phenomena' into Dogma and it is this Dogma which the 'WILL' tries to negate without ever
taking into account the origin of the Dogma.

Jim found release for His Mental Torment/Drug Dependence through His Writings...

Others So-called 'Friends' and 'Lovers' exploited His DEPENDENCY/Weakness- His Story is one of many...too many.....Adios Jim You inspired Many- I count Myself Lucky to have seen Your Brilliance

Sadly PEYOTE usage in adolescence has affected Jim's Mental 'Balance'...

Indians on Highways...?...or 'High-ways'[HIGHTOWER] of a wannabee Shaman?.

Jim's witnessing of Death and 'hearing the Souls of the deceased' famously quoted in many interviews
is akin to a form of PTSD - the TRACKS [that stopped the Earth] and the BLUE CAR [in which He was a Passenger] were pushed out of His 'Consciousness into the 'Shadows'....
but in the 'Collective' THEY EVENTUALLY RE-SURFACED IN DIFFERENT 'FORM'
.
                                                 [NATIVE-AMERICAN,MANDALA]

IT'S LIKE JESUS SAID"BE OF GOOD CHEER FOR I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD"...
JESUS LIKE BUDDHA IS THE ARCHETYPE OF THE SELF-ACCORDING TO CARL JUNG.

THEREFORE THEY MUST BE THE POSITIVE 'ATTITUDE' THAT IS CRUCIAL
TO SELF-HEALING.

THE POEM ACTUALLY IS JIM MORRISON-BECAUSE IT [THE 'I' OR EGO]ITSELF-CREATED.

JIM THE 'EGO-TRIPPER'DID GET TO'OPEN THE DOORS' OF CONSCIOUSNESS.

WHAT HE FOUND INSIDE THE 'SELF' WAS THE[REPRESSED] BLUE CAR...THE DEPRESSED 'SPIRIT'..

NOW ADDICTED TO HEROIN-HE WAS UNABLE TO CLOSE THE DOOR-HIS CAREFULLY CULTIVATED EGO  'WILL' NO LONGER COULD RESIST
.. THE ARCHAIC 'SELF' CONTENT

[JESUS SAID 'I AM THE DOOR' ETC]

[REPRESSED DESIRES EMOTIONS ETC ARE CONTAINED IN THE COLLECTIVE].

.WHICH WOULD EVENTUALLY PRESS HIM INTO
THE DUST HE WAS FORMED FROM.

ALL THAT WOULD REMAIN WERE HIS THOUGHTS...AND A BY PRODUCT FOR A MUSICIAN WAS INDEED AN INCREASE IN 'CREATIVITY' AND 'ORIGINALITY' FOR A BRIEF
GLITTERING MOMENT IN ETERNITY..ONLY TO PASS LIKE A BREATH OF WIND IN A HURRICANE...

JIM...WAS A GUIDE WHO LOST HIS WAY.

Do I love you ?, Indeed I Do! [Frank Wilson]

Here I am on bended knees
I lay my heart down at your feet
Now do I love you

All you have to do is ask
I'll give until there's nothing left
do I love you

As long as there is life in me
Your happiness is guaranteed
I'll fill your heart with ecstasy, forever darling

Do I love you?
Do I love you?
Do I love you?
Indeed I do Indeed I do

The very thing that I want most
Is just to have and hold you close
Do I love you?

From early morning until late at night
You fill my heart with pure delight
Do I love you?

whenever I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord your soul to keep
And bring you home safe to me, for ever darling

Do I love you?
Do I love you?
Do I love you?

Indeed I do, sweet darling, indeed I do

Now whenever I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord your soul to keep
And bring you home safe to me
for ever darling

Do I love you?
Do I love you?
Do I love you?
Indeed I do, little darling,

indeed I do!

Cynic, Bread for Dogs?

“In the end we shall have had enough of cynicism and skepticism and humbug and we shall want to live more musically”

[vincent Van Gogh]

“What is a cynic? A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.”
[Oscar Wilde]

CYN-IC

–noun

–adjective
4.
cynical.
5.
( initial capital letter ) Also, Cynical. of or pertaining to the Cynics or their doctrines.

Origin:
1540–50; < Latin Cynicus < Greek Kynikós Cynic, literally, doglike, currish, equivalent to kyn- (stem of kýōn ) dog + -ikos - ic

Does a dog have a Buddha nature?

Did Jesus deal metaphorically with Dogs?

Matthew 15:21-28

"Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon. And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, 'Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed.' But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, 'Send her away, because she keeps shouting at us.' But He answered and said, 'I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.' But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, 'Lord, help me!' And He answered and said, 'It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.' But she said, 'Yes, Lord; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.' Then Jesus said to her, 'O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish.' And her daughter was healed at once." (Matthew 15:21-28; cf. Mark 7:24-30).

Jesus withdrew from the region of Galilee and went into the region of Tyre and Sidon. It was His first visit to a Gentile nation. Tyre and Sidon were located just to the north of Galilee.

The Problem
There, a Canaanite woman sought help for her demon-possessed daughter.

She indicated that the effects were particularly cruel, but did not elaborate.

But it was recognized as something different than a physical illness.

When the cause was physical, the Lord would say so.

It is not true that they were just superstitious and thought every sickness was caused by evil spirits. But some were.

Jesus' disciples asked Him to send her away. They did not care much for Gentiles.

Jesus explained to her that He was sent only to "the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

This refers to His personal ministry on earth, that He had been sent to preach unto Israel.

The prophet Ezekiel had spoken of this: "Therefore, I will deliver My flock, and they will no longer be a prey; and I will judge between one sheep and another. Then I will set over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them; he will feed them himself and be their shepherd." (Ezekiel 34:22-23).

Bears

Throughout mankinds' history, Bears, have played an important, Mythologic ,role.

I ,shall ,examine, some examples, of, 'Fairy Tales/Mythologems', starting ,with, the Jungian example, of 'Bruder Klaus',
a Swiss, 'Mystic', who remained, in, a chaotic, mental state, for, more, than, twenty years.

Mystical hermit
Popularizations of the life of Nicholas of Flue conflate his influence on contemporary events with his mysticism. Through his hermit life, Nicholas experienced visions, vividly recalled. When still with his family and considering an eremitic life, Nicholas had dreamed of a horse consuming a lily, which he took to mean that the cares of the world (represented by the draft-horse) were consuming the spiritual life (represented by the lily). A significant dream justified his eremitic life, wherein he sees a pilgrim approaching him, who is transformed into Christ but also Wotan, and into a berserker, a wildman in appearance, like a bear, frightening in aspect. C. G. Jung interpreted the dream carefully and explicitly:
The meaning of the vision could be this. Brother Klaus recognizes himself in his spiritual pilgrimhood and in his instinctive (bearlike, i.e., hermitlike) subhumanness as Christ. ... The brutal coldness of feeling that the saint requires to separate himself from woman and child, and friendship is found in the subhuman animal kingdom. Thus the saint casts an animal shadow. He who was capable of bearing in the highest and the lowest to get this is hollowed, holy, whole. The vision is telling him that the spiritual pilgrim and the berserker are both Christ, and this paves the way in him for forgiveness of the greatest sin, which is sainthood.
To be a saint, in the eyes of Nicholas and the world, was a "sin" in that it required a turning away from filial affection, from family duty, from love of his spouse to whom he was jointed in sacramental union and therefore obliged to care for. But sainthood calls for removing all of this human accretion, nd so he has taken this dangerous psychological step. The dream reassures him
As Von Franz explains, the vision of Brother Klaus "unites irreconcilable opposites, that is, subhuman savagery and Christian spirituality." By entering this figure of berserker into his life and psychology, Klaus is capable of reconciling his personal conflicts (and be able to advise anyone else). The eremitic life means reconciling the impulses and instincts of aggression, anger, lust, and pride with the spiritual values of renunciation, disengagement, humility, and non-possession. The Christ-figure has never completely engaged those in the world, never been fully understood as anything but pain nd suffering. Von Franz suggests that only the counterpart berserker figure can provoke the psychic energies that could reconcile the terrible cost of sainthood, could
integrate our personal shadow, not the collective shadow of the Self, the dark side of the Godhead. Yet if we suffer the problem of the opposites to the utmost and accept it into ourselves, we can sometimes become a place in which the divine opposites can spontaneously come together. This is quite clearly what happened to Brother Klaus.
The bear-skinned pilgrim who is the berserker is also the bear who has attained the honey of love and compassion, who can advise and sympathize with others while retaining his distance. On the personal scale, this attainment allowed Nicholas to feel reconciled to his absence of family life. At the same time opening himself to visitors from many nations and classes. The mature hermit can function like a therapist, as has been seen in hermits throughout history, East and West. Jung went so far as to suggest that Brother Klaus should be the patron saint of psychotherapy.
This famous vision exemplifies Jung's comment that Brother Klaus' dreams and visions are largely unadulterated by formal learning other than rudimentary catechetical knowledge of the time. The dreams and visions clearly represent universal archetypes. Thus the famous wheel image found on the cell wall of Brother Klaus' hermitage in his last year of life, and reportedly described by him as "my book in which I learn and seek the art of its teaching."
circleGodhead But the image was a remnant of a dream he experienced 10 years before his death, the vision of an angry and terrible God, with six images representing six episodes in the life of Christ -- as well as six religious virtues enjoined by the mollifying words of Jesus -- again reconciling the psychological opposites represented in Christianity.
Conclusion
As Von Franz notes, " compared to such holy sages as Lao Tzu or Chuang Tzu, Brother Klaus as a solitary hermit is a humbler figure." The identification of eremitic solitude as a vocation not only exempted him in the eyes of his Swiss compatriots as a gifted person, but gave Brother Klaus the psychological space to grow as a hermit reconciling the opposing needs of spirituality and sociability, of mystical vision and contribution to others. His abandonment of the world was an abandonment of its false values, but not of his fellow human beings in their simple yearnings.
Nicholas of Flue is esteemed by Christians of many sects. The Swiss Protestant writer Denis de Rougemont wrote a play about the life of Nicholas, and it was set as a libretto to an oratorio by the Protestant Swiss composer Arthur Honegger in 1939. The work was performed in Rome on the canonization of Nicholas of Flue in 1947.

Edward F Edinger, has elaborated the example above, citing the 'Bearskin', [symbol of 'beserker']
as being the most important, yet most easily overlooked, symbol.
Bears show up all the time in the most innocuous situations.

Melville; 'Redburn',[ch27]

The third day, with a good wind over the taffrail, we arrived so near
our destination, that we took a pilot at dusk.
He, and every thing connected with him were very different from our New
York pilot. In the first place, the pilot boat that brought him was a
plethoric looking sloop-rigged boat, with flat bows, that went wheezing
through the water; quite in contrast to the little gull of a schooner,
that bade us adieu off Sandy Hook. Aboard of her were ten or twelve
other pilots, fellows with shaggy brows, and muffled in shaggy coats,
who sat grouped together on deck like a fire-side of bears, wintering in
Aroostook. They must have had fine sociable times, though, together;
cruising about the Irish Sea in quest of Liverpool-bound vessels;
smoking cigars, drinking brandy-and-water, and spinning yarns; till at
last, one by one, they are all scattered on board of different ships,
and meet again by the side of a blazing sea-coal fire in some Liverpool
taproom, and prepare for another yachting.
Now, when this English pilot boarded us, I stared at him as if he had
been some wild animal just escaped from the Zoological Gardens; for here
was a real live Englishman, just from England. Nevertheless, as he soon
fell to ordering us here and there, and swearing vociferously in a
language quite familiar to me; I began to think him very common-place,
and considerable of a bore after all.

Some Bear Mythology;

The seven brightest stars of Ursa Major form a famous asterism known in the United Kingdom as the Plough, and was formerly called by the old name Charles's Wain ("wain" meaning "wagon") as it still is in Scandinavia, Karlavagnen. This common Germanic name originally meant the men's wagon (churls' wagon) in contrast to the women's wagon (Ursa Minor). There is also a theory that it was named after Charlemagne. In North America it is commonly known as the Big Dipper, because the major stars can be seen to follow the rough outline of a large ladle, or dipper; this is recognized as a grouping of stars in many cultures throughout the eras. In Hindu astronomy, it is referred to as Sapta Rishi meaning "The Seven Sages". Read More ...

Asterism derives from the Greek word for 'star', 'aster'. In astronomy, an asterism is a recognized pattern of stars seen in Earth's sky which is neither an official constellation nor a true star cluster. Asterisms are considered to be distinct from constellations, although the origin of most constellations is also a recognizable pattern of stars.

An asterism might be a part of a constellation, a pattern composed of stars from two or more constellations, or a smaller distinctive pattern of stars which are not physically associated and are therefore not classified as a cluster. Examples of Asterisms Aster - in reference to a planet, or to a particular configuration of planets or a conjunction of planets and stars - might be implicit in Matthew's description of the Star (aster) of Bethlehem which, if it was not an angelic or supernatural phenomenon, need not have been a single star.

Aster is also associated with Zoroaster. The 3 Magi were Zoroastrian priests.

Nanook;

In Inuit mythology, Nanook or Nanuq[1] (Inuktitut syllabics: ᓇᓄᖅ[2]), which is from the Inuit language for polar bear, was the master of bears, meaning he decided if hunters had followed all applicable taboos and if they deserved success in hunting bears.

The big fish: consciousness as structure, body and space By Anna J. Bonshek, Corrina Bonshek, Lee C. Fergusson

The 'Great Noon-Tide Sun', is Garuda? is Aquila? is Shiva?, curiouser and curiouser!

Here's a thought! maybe Nietzsche was a Hindu? or, maybe, he had an encounter with the 'self'?, and that...as Jung constantly points out, is always a defeat for the Ego!

-------------------------------------------------
Thus Spake Zarathustra[Friedrich Nietzsche]

LXX. NOONTIDE.

--And Zarathustra ran and ran, but he found no one else, and was alone and ever found himself again; he enjoyed and quaffed his solitude, and thought of good things--for hours.

About the hour of noontide, however, when the sun stood exactly over Zarathustra`s head, he passed an old, bent and gnarled tree, which was encircled round by the ardent love of a vine, and hidden from itself; from this there hung yellow grapes in abundance, confronting the wanderer.

Then he felt inclined to quench a little thirst, and to break off for himself a cluster of grapes.

When, however, he had already his arm out-stretched for that purpose, he felt still more inclined for something else--namely, to lie down beside the tree at the hour of perfect noontide and sleep.

This Zarathustra did; and no sooner had he laid himself on the ground in the stillness and secrecy of the variegated grass, than he had forgotten his little thirst, and fell asleep.

For as the proverb of Zarathustra saith: "One thing is more necessary than the other."

Only that his eyes remained open:--for they never grew weary of viewing and admiring the tree and the love of the vine.

In falling asleep, however, Zarathustra spake thus to his heart:

"Hush! Hush! Hath not the world now become perfect? What hath happened unto me?

As a delicate wind danceth invisibly upon parqueted seas, light, featherlight, so--danceth sleep upon me.

No eye doth it close to me, it leaveth my soul awake. Light is it, verily, feather-light.

It persuadeth me, I know not how, it toucheth me inwardly with a caressing hand, it constraineth me. Yea, it constraineth me, so that my soul stretcheth itself out:-

--How long and weary it becometh, my strange soul! Hath a seventh-day evening come to it precisely at noontide? Hath it already wandered too long, blissfully, among good and ripe things?

It stretcheth itself out, long--longer! it lieth still, my strange soul.

Nietzsche, Melville, Some Observations [on their literary symbolism.

Nietzsche; 'Schopenhauer As Educator',     [  http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Schopenhauer_as_Educator  ]

WHEN the traveller, who had seen many countries and nations and continents, was asked what common attribute he had found everywhere existing among men, he answered,

"They have a tendency to sloth."

Many may think that the fuller truth would have been, "They are all timid." They hide themselves behind "manners" and "opinions."

At bottom every man knows well enough that he is a unique being, only once on this earth; and by no extraordinary chance will such a marvellously picturesque piece of diversity in unity as he is, ever be put together a second time.

He knows this, but hides it like an evil conscience;—and why? From fear of his neighbour, who looks for the latest conventionalities in him, and is wrapped up in them himself.

But what is it that forces the man to fear his neighbour, to think and act with his herd, and not seek his own joy? Shyness perhaps, in a few rare cases, but in the majority it is idleness, the "taking things easily," in a word the "tendency to sloth," of which the traveller spoke.

He was right; men are more slothful than timid, and their greatest fear is of the burdens that an uncompromising honesty and nakedness of speech and action would lay on them.

It is only the artists who hate this lazy wandering in borrowed manners and ill-fitting opinions, and discover the secret of the evil conscience, the truth that each human being is a unique marvel.

They show us, how in every little movement of his muscles the man is an individual self, and further—as an analytical deduction from his individuality—a beautiful and interesting object, a new and incredible phenomenon (as is every work of nature), that can never become tedious.

If the great thinker despise mankind, it is for their laziness; they seem mere indifferent bits of pottery, not worth any commerce or improvement.

The man who will not belong to the general mass, has only to stop "taking himself easily"; to follow his conscience, which cries out to him, "Be thyself! all that thou doest and thinkest and desirest, is not thyself!"

Every youthful soul hears this cry day and night, and quivers to hear it: for she divines the sum of happiness that has been from eternity destined for her, if she think of her true deliverance; and towards this happiness she can in no wise be helped, so long as she lies in the chains of Opinion and of Fear.

And how comfortless and unmeaning may life become without this deliverance! There is no more desolate or Ishmaelitish creature in nature than the man who has broken away from his true genius, and does nothing but peer aimlessly about him.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Herman Melville, 'Moby Dick, or The Whale',

Chapter 1 - Loomings
Call me Ishmael.

Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world.

It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off- then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.

This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At first reading, only the word, 'Ishmael', is a common factor, in both author's, works.

The Biblical , Ishmael,[ as has been pointed out by E F Edinger,] is, in fact, an indicator, of the condition of being, an, 'outsider'.
Both authors, are very deep thinking, Philosophers, how they use syntax to describe their respective world views, is perhaps superficially different, but, inherent, is a great need to express, 'Sorrow'.

A cursory background research, shows some remarkable similarities.

At a young age[5 for Nietzsche] both authors, lost their fathers.
Both authors, came from a, predominantly female, family unit, sisters ,aunts etc.
Both authors, had a strict Christian upbringing, Nietzsches' father was an ordained minister.

My hypothesis, is they both had an encounter with, 'Self', as described in Jungian terminology.
I also hypothesise, that they had experience of entheogens, and were probably sexually androgynous.

Realisation of Sorrow, is the fate of any higher consciousness, speculation about the sexuality, of both authors,
has been explored by many others. D. Finkelstein's, analysis, of, 'The Whale', 'Melville's Phallic Jokes', etc etc,can perhaps shed some light on the writings of Melville.
Nietzsche? was he gay?
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/06/books/is-there-a-gay-basis-to-nietzsche-s-ideas.html

''Gradually it has become clear to me,'' Nietzsche wrote in 1886, ''what every philosophy so far has been: namely, the personal confession of its author and a kind of involuntary and unconscious memoir.'' In Nietzsche's case, the confession and memoir are out in the open, so much so that his philoso phy has occasionally been dismissed, the way an intimate friend once put it, as ''nothing other than a brilliant exercise in self-presentation and self-revelation.''
So is Nietzsche's philosophy really no more than a coded confession of secret experiences? Hardly, as can readily be seen from another recent book, Rüdiger Safranski's ''Nietzsche: A Philosophical Biography'' (W. W. Norton, $29.95). In fact, Nietzsche's intellectual influence for a century and a quarter has been remarkable because he had so many ideas, at least some of which touched crucial cultural nerves.
Now Mr. Köhler is touching one as well; he is preoccupied with one great ''secret'' that he says dominated Nietzsche's life. That secret is homosexuality, which has always hovered around the margins of Nietzsche's reputation.

The Whale? or more likely, along with Munch, 'The Wail!',

[and gnashing of teeth]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think I'm goin' back
To the things
I learned so well
In my youth

I think I'm returning to
Those days
When I was young enough
To know the truth

Now there are no games
To only pass the time
No more colouring books
No Christmas bells to chime

But thinking young
And growing older
Is no sin
And I can play
The game of life to win

I can recall the time
When I wasn't ashamed
To reach out to a friend
And now I think I've got
A lot more than
A skipping rope to lend

Now there's more to do
Than watch my sailboat glide
And everyday can be
My magic carpet ride
And I can play hide and seek with my fears
And live my days instead of counting my years

Let everyone debate the true reality
I'd rather see the world the way it used to be
A little bit of freedom's
All we lack
So catch me if you can
I'm goin' back

Sunday Morning Coming Down..

Well I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for desert

Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes and found my cleanest dirty shirt
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day

I'd smoke my brain the night before on cigarettes and songs that I've been pickin'
And I lit my first and watched the small kid cussin' at the can that he's kickin'

Then I crossed the empty street and caught
The Sunday smell of someone fryin' chicken

And it took me back to something that I'd lost somehow somewhere along the way
On the Sunday morning sidewalk wishing Lord that I was stoned

Cause there's something in a Sunday makes a body feel alone

There ain't nothing sure to dying half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleepin' city sidewalk Sunday morning coming down

In the park I saw a daddy with the laughin' little girl that he was swingin'

And I stopped beside a Sunday school and listened to the song that they were singin'

Then I headed down the street and somewhere far away a lonesome bell was ringin'

And it echoed through the canyons like the disappearing dreams of yesterday

On the Sunday morning sidewalk...

On the Sunday morning sidewalk...

Sailing [Christopher Cross]

It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When i'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me

It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Maya

As the virgin mother of Buddha, Maya embarrassed ascetic Buddhists and was soon written out of the script. Like ascetic Christians speaking of Christ's birth, some Buddhists claimed the Enlightened One could not touch his mother's "parts of shame" and so was born through an opening in her side. This mythic Caesarian section seems to have been bungled, for a few days later Maya died -- "of joy," as Buddhist scriptures rather fatuously put it.

Nevertheless, Maya remained very much alive as one of Kali's most revered manifestations, because the very fact of "Existence"-- the material cosmos-demanded her presence. As Zimmer analyzed her:
Maya-Shakti is personified as the world-protecting, feminine, maternal side of Ultimate Being, and as such, stands for spontaneous, loving acceptance of life's tangible reality...[S]he affirms, she is, she represents and enjoys, the delirium of the manifested forms.... Maya-Shakti is Eve, "the Eternal Feminine," das Ewig-Weibliche: she who ate, she and tempted her consort to eat, and was herself the apple. From the point of view of the masculine principle of the Spirit (which is in quest of the enduring, eternally valid, and absolutely divine) she is the pre-eminent enigma.

In herself Maya embodied all three aspects of the maternal trinity. Her colors were white, red, and black, the colors of the Gunas, or the Virgin-Mother-Crone. Like every other form of Kali, she was Creator, Preserver, Destroyer. She was also a spirit dwelling perpetually in women, A Mahayana text says, "Of all the forms of Maya, woman is the most important."

Maya's son Buddha was surrounded by her symbols. He entered his trance of meditation under her sacred fig tree, which protected him from the weather. On his return from the soul-journey, his first symbolic act was to accept a dish of curds from a maiden on Full Moon Day in the month of May, the greatest of Buddhist festivals.

Not only the month but many other traditions attest to the great age and wide distribution of the Goddess Maya. She was more than the Maia who mothered Hermes; she was also Maga the Grandmother-goddess who bore Cu Chulainn's mother; and the Mandaean Christian's Almaya, called "Eternity," or "the World," or "Beings"; and Maga or Maj the May-maiden in Scandinavia. Like the Hindu Maya who brought forth earthly appearances at creation, the Scandinavian one personified the pregnant womb of chaos before the beginning: Ginnungagap. In this the World-virgin was associated with the idea of magical illusion, creating "appearances" like her Hindu counterpart.

This universal Creatress-name may have reached the western hemisphere also. The Maya people of Yucatan offered sacrifices in the same way as in northern India, at the same seasons, determined by the same stars. Mayan "scorpion stars" were the same as the constellation Scorpio on Hindu and Greek charts. As in India, Mayan divine images were painted blue and Mayan women pierced the left nostril for insertion of a jewel. Another version of the Creatress seems to have been the Mother Goddess Mayauel of the Mexican Agave, called "Woman with Four Hundred Breasts," with a strong resemblance to the world-nurturing Many-Breasted Artemis and other eastern forms of the deity who mothered all the world's creatures.
