An American Frankenstein, in Liverpool

nightmare on lime streetTelevision star and producer David Gest is set to tread the boards in the specially adapted role of Frankenstein’s monster in a hilarious new comedy-horror stage production ‘A Nightmare On Lime Street’. The production is the latest in a series of hit Christmas shows penned by critically acclaimed British writer Fred Lawless and runs for 9 weeks (51 shows in total) from Friday 23 November 2012 to 12 January 2013 at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre.
The run includes a special star-studded Charity Gala performance of the show on Sunday 9 December 2012 at 5:00 PM with guests to include Katherine Jackson, mother of David’s close friend the late “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, as well as the superstar singer’s siblings, Tito Jackson (David’s best friend since childhood) and Rebbie Jackson.

Many of his friends from the UK soap operas and the music industry will also attend. All proceeds raised from the gala evening will benefit the Royal Court Trust, which is dedicated to safeguarding the future of Liverpool’s ‘People’s Theatre’. The event will feature a gourmet dinner following a special performance of the show as well as surprise musical guests performing. There will also be a celebrity auction later that evening featuring items from Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and many, many more.
Tickets for the dinner, performance and after show event and auction on Sunday 9 December range from £250 – £500. There will also be seats available for the performance only from £25. David Gest is a much-loved household name in the UK since he became an overnight sensation in 2006 on ITV1’s ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!’ completely charming a new legion of British fans.  He is also the first American to have three prime-time television series in the UK after a 45-year career in the US working at the highest levels of the music industry and producing some of the most successful – and indeed the single most successful – TV shows of all time. He is relishing the new role and the opportunity to sing four numbers on stage for the first time in his career.
“I sang a couple of my numbers from the show on the phone last night to Dionne Warwick and Smokey Robinson and they were both shocked that I was actually in key. So was I for that matter!,” Gest says. Tito Jackson adds: “David is a complete natural for a role as a monster who wants to be a Broadway star. I’m sure he’ll put all his effort into making this a huge success and, let’s face it, everyone in the UK knows he is very funny!”
Kevin Fearon, Chief Executive of Royal Court Liverpool: “Our Christmas shows have grown year on year and are now very much part of a Liverpool Christmas. We are all delighted that an international star like David has joined the family here to take the show to another level. We are expecting a monster performance!”
‘A Nightmare On Lime Street’ is the fourth in a series of Royal Court Christmas shows to have been written by Fred Lawless. The show follows on from the successful ‘Merry Ding Dong’ (2009), ‘Scouse Pacific’ (2010) and ‘Little Scouse On The Prairie’ (2011). The shows, which are primarily aimed at an adult audience, use local actors and musicians and are packed with near-the-knuckle jokes and outlandish songs held together by a plot in a surreal setting. The director of the show will be Ken Alexander and Musical Director will be Howard Gray.
The show begins in Liverpool in the 1800s. Tchaikovsky’s Overture is Number 1 in the ye olde poppe chart and Dr Frankenstein is curator of antiquities at Liverpool Museum. He is lying low for a while after the ‘misunderstanding’ in Bavaria. But that hasn’t stopped him experimenting in his quest to earn the respect of the scientific community. In between importing the most evil artefacts the world has known he has kept up his hobby of monster-making. But his new monster (Gest) isn’t what he expected. He’s American and very polite, definitely not what you would expect from a monster. In fact he’s rather disappointed and sets about fixing him to be a proper monster. But, thanks to Egor his short-sighted assistant, a badly made egg-nog puts him to sleep for 200 years.
Fast forward to Liverpool, 2012. Being sacked for being asleep on the job was the final straw and Dr Frankenstein has vowed to get his revenge by bringing the city of Liverpool to its knees and strange things are happening in the city. Enter Tommy Hughes – Vampire Slayer and his daughter Julie to hopefully save the day. Can they stop the invasion of the Superlambananadaleks? Can they stop the magical Liver Birds flying away?
With the help of Sister Sledge the singing Nun and 20 rocking songs, this zany comic horror caper will ‘monster mash’ your brain and have you laughing all the way to the crypt.  Bring your garlic, silver bullets and holy water and help good conquer evil in the silliest horror story ever written.  Dracula will be turning in his grave!
‘A Nightmare On Lime Street’ runs from Friday 23 November to Saturday 12 January 2012 at the Royal Court Liverpool. Shows are 8pm Monday to Saturday plus Saturday matinee at 2pm. Tickets prices range from £13 to £23 depending on dates. Meals can be added for £10 when buying tickets. The booking hotline is 0870 787 1866 and tickets can also be purchased at royalcourtliverpool.com

Gene Therapy

PseudoGenes. [wikipedia]

Two 2008 publications in Nature discuss that some endogenous siRNAs are derived from pseudogenes, and thus some pseudogenes play a role in regulating protein-coding transcripts.[30][31] In June 2010, Nature published an article showing the mRNA levels of tumour suppressor PTEN and oncogenic KRAS is affected by their pseudogenes PTENP1 and KRAS1P.
This discovery demonstrated an miRNA decoy function for pseudogenes and identified their transcripts as biologically active units in tumor biology; thus attributing a novel biological role to expressed pseudogenes, as they can regulate coding gene expression, and reveal a non-coding function for mRNAs in disease progression.
